DAVID JAMES GILHOOLY
Sculptor, Teacher 1943

"I was simply a lousy student academically.
Looking back, I know that what I wanted was to be independent."

The work by Gilhooly, his fellow students and mentors resulted in the emergence of what Roy De Forest called "Nut Art." But popularly, this art was referred to as "funk" after Peter Selz mounted a show of the same title at the university of California Art Museum in 1966.
